New Aadhaar App

HIGHLIGHTS

Face authentication and QR scans facilitate instantaneous, paperless Aadhaar verification.

Users maintain comprehensive control over the personal information they choose to share via the app.

The app is presently in beta testing, with plans for a broader rollout following user feedback.

Recently, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced an innovative mobile application designed for Aadhaar that incorporates advanced facial recognition technology along with AI-driven authentication capabilities. This app, developed in collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), strives to simplify Aadhaar verification, making it as straightforward and secure as executing transactions through Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

With this new Aadhaar application, individuals will no longer need to carry physical copies of their Aadhaar cards for verification purposes in hotels, retail establishments, airports, and other venues. Instead, users can authenticate their identities using QR code scans and real-time facial recognition, all from their smartphones.

Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized on social media platform X that the application empowers users by granting them full authority over their personal data. He stated, “No more circulating Aadhaar photocopies. With just a tap, you can share only the essential information while ensuring your privacy remains intact,” he posted on X (previously known as Twitter).

The application leverages Aadhaar Face Authentication, a system that has successfully handled over 150 million transactions monthly across myriad industries. Furthermore, it introduces QR-based verification, mirroring the convenience of UPI payments through QR codes.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced that the app will enable Aadhaar holders to verify their identities and disclose information solely when absolutely necessary and in a digital format. It is designed with multiple safety features to thwart data misuse, prevent unauthorized access, and guard against identity theft.

Currently, the application is in a beta testing phase and is accessible to a limited user group, including participants of the recent Aadhaar Samvaad event. Officials are actively seeking feedback to refine the app before its wide-scale release.

Once it is fully launched, this Aadhaar application is anticipated to streamline service accessibility while upholding user privacy standards. This marks a significant advancement in the ongoing digital governance initiatives within India.
