A recent case from Pune highlights the vulnerabilities that individuals face. In this unfortunate incident, a 54-year-old man lost a staggering Rs 2.5 lakh after falling victim to a deceitful KYC update scheme. This article delves into the details of the scam and offers insights on how to protect oneself from similar fraudulent activities.
The victim, who worked at a private firm, received a suspicious message from an unknown number, informing him that his bank account KYC update was pending. The message crafted a sense of urgency, warning that if he failed to complete the required process, his account would be blocked. To make the ruse appear more credible, the message contained a link directing him to download an APK file, typically used for Android applications.

Shortly after receiving the initial message, the victim was contacted by an individual posing as a bank representative. The impersonator insisted that the victim must download the file and provide personal details to proceed with the KYC update, as reported by TOI. Trusting the caller’s claims, the victim followed the directions. Tragically, once he inputted his details, a staggering Rs 2.5 lakh was fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account.
