According to findings from Counterpoint Research, the Apple iPhone 15 emerged as the best-selling smartphone globally for the year 2024. This notable achievement showcased Apple’s continuous reign in the smartphone market, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro closely following the flagship model, taking the second and third slots on the list, respectively.
The dominance exhibited by Apple in the smartphone sector reinforces its position as the top brand, particularly in light of the fact that no other manufacturers aside from Samsung were able to break into the top 10 global best-selling smartphone rankings. This dominance marks the third consecutive year that both Apple and Samsung have completely ruled the best-selling smartphone landscape.
One of the key factors contributing to the iPhone 15’s success was its overwhelming demand within critical markets, notably the United States and China, which collectively accounted for nearly half of the device’s total sales worldwide. Furthermore, an increasing inclination toward Pro models played a significant role in Apple reaching a remarkable landmark—more than half of all iPhone sales were attributed to the Pro variants for the very first time.

The availability of attractive financing options and trade-in programs was instrumental in making high-end iPhones more accessible to consumers, particularly in emerging markets. This trend significantly helped Apple break into India’s top five smartphone brands in Q4 2024 for the first time in its history.
On the flip side, Samsung made headway in 2024 with a commendable performance that led to it securing four spots within the top 10 best-selling smartphones, up from three in the previous year. Notably, the return of the Galaxy S series to the list of best-sellers for the first time since 2018 is one of its significant achievements. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, recognized as Samsung’s flagship offering, garnered substantial attention due to its innovative GenAI-powered features, including chat assistance, contextual search, and real-time language translation capabilities.
Additionally, the Galaxy A15 series emerged as a strong performer, outpacing its predecessor, the Galaxy A14. The A15 series particularly thrived in North America, where it witnessed the most pronounced sales growth.
A major trend identified in 2024 was the increasing consumer interest in smartphones equipped with Generative AI technology. Out of the top 10 best-selling models, five featured this advanced technology, and it is anticipated that GenAI-capable smartphones will carve out an even larger space in 2025’s market list.
