Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made its foray into the realm of quantum computing with the introduction of its inaugural quantum chip, Ocelot. This innovation follows closely on the heels of Microsoft’s launch of its own quantum chip, marking AWS’s entry into a sector already populated by major players like Google and Microsoft, which have previously rolled out their chips—Majorana and Willow, respectively.

For the past six years, Amazon has strategically invested in the realm of quantum technology through its quantum computing-as-a-service platform named Braket, developed in collaboration with QuEra and Rigetti. According to the tech giant, Ocelot aims not only to advance the development of quantum hardware but also to reduce error rates—an obstacle that has hampered the practical implementation of quantum computing.

In partnership with Caltech, AWS has designed Ocelot to utilize two stacked silicon microchips. This innovative architecture is set to slash error correction costs by as much as 90%. In the realm of quantum computing, which leverages quantum bits (qubits) to perform complex calculations at unprecedented speeds, the implications of such advancements are vast, promising breakthroughs in drug discovery, artificial intelligence, security, and numerous other fields.

Oskar Painter, AWS’s director of quantum hardware, emphasized the importance of these advancements, stating, “Given the recent breakthroughs in quantum research, we are now at a point where it’s not a question of if practical, fault-tolerant quantum computers will become available, but when.” He further elaborated on the potential affordability of future quantum chips designed using the Ocelot framework, predicting that they could cost as little as one-fifth of current methodologies. This significant reduction in the resources required for error correction is expected to hasten the timeline for realizing a practical quantum computer by as much as five years.

Moreover, in another update, Amazon has unveiled Alexa+, an enhanced AI voice assistant aimed at delivering more personalized interactions and streamlined task management. Powered by Amazon Bedrock, this next-generation assistant promises natural, conversational abilities while facilitating advanced home management and automation features. However, there is a subscription fee of $19.99 per month to utilize this service. Interestingly, Amazon Prime subscribers can access Alexa+ at no additional cost.

Currently, the Alexa+ assistant is in early access and is available to a select group of users in the United States who have registered for the trial.
