In a troubling incident highlighting the growing threat of online fraud, a 38-year-old woman from Mangaluru experienced a loss exceeding Rs 2 lakh after unwittingly clicking on a deceitful link sent through a text message. The victim, identified as Vasudha Gopalakrishna Shenoy, serves as a bank branch manager in Belthangady. Intrigued by an SMS that promised potential employment, she clicked on the link, believing it to be a legitimate job opportunity. Unfortunately, this decision led to the compromise of her personal information and the subsequent scam.
According to reports, Shenoy received a text message containing enticing job offers along with a suspicious link directing her to “interviewshine.co.in.” Lured by the prospect of a better opportunity, she clicked on the provided link, which resulted in significant exposure of her personal data to criminals operating online.
The true extent of the scam became apparent when Shenoy found out that her Gmail account and Amazon app had been breached. The fraudsters took advantage of this access to secure her credit card details and promptly initiated unauthorized transactions. Within a matter of hours, Shenoy suffered losses amounting to roughly Rs 2,19,500, as fraudulent transactions drained her bank accounts, Amazon wallet, and credit cards.
Upon realizing that she had fallen victim to a scam, Shenoy promptly alerted the relevant authorities and lodged a complaint with the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Station under the provisions laid out in Sections 318(2) and 318(4) of the BNS Act, in addition to Section 66(D) of the IT Act.
This incident deviates from the usual work-from-home job scams or parcel scams, showcasing the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to entice and defraud unsuspecting individuals. While the world becomes increasingly interconnected through technology, so do the methods that scammers employ to exploit their victims. Finally, regular scrutiny of your bank statements can help detect any unusual activity early on.
