This unfortunate incident recently befell a 57-year-old woman from Bengaluru, who was deceived out of Rs 2 lakh after engaging with a fraudulent Interactive Voice Response (IVR) call.

Understanding the Scam’s Progression

Sumitra (name changed), on January 20 at approximately 3:55 PM, received a call from an unidentified number. Believing it to be from SBI due to the name displayed on her screen, and considering she held an account there, she answered the call.

The robotic voice on the line alerted her that Rs 2 lakh was currently being transferred from her account. It provided options, instructing if the transaction was authorized by her to press ‘3’ and to press ‘1’ if it was an unauthorized transaction. Stunned and bewildered, Sumitra initially hesitated to respond. The ominous message repeated several times, compelling her to press ‘1’ to report the transaction she hadn’t authorized. Shortly thereafter, the call disconnected. When she inspected her bank statement, she was horrified to see that Rs 2 lakh had already been withdrawn from her account, as reported by TOI. In quick succession, she rushed to the bank where the manager advised her to contact the cyber helpline at 1930 to lodge a complaint.
